Our Inspiration

The heart and inspiration for Mudsugar Coffee + Pie is our two daughters, Stacie (14), and Alexa (11). They both have extremely life threatening allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, and seeds. Although our girls are strong, and understand and accept their medical condition, the limitations can be very hard on them. The dangers are unavoidable. Going to restaurants, parties/events, and their own schools can feel like walking through a minefield. The gravity of food allergies are generally not understood by those outside of allergy child community, and we can’t expect others to understand. So, we are constantly researching and trying to find new products that they can safely eat; making lists of allergy-friendly restaurants; keeping track of new allergy innovations, and educating anyone in our daughter’s lives that will listen. It’s thoroughly exhausting, but necessary.

​​There are a handful of allergy-friendly bakeries and food product companies scattered across the country, but they are hardly helpful in our day-to-day lives. Through our constant research, we find ourselves asking the same questions over and over, “why is there not more local allergy-friendly version of this, or that?” After a decade of hoping and asking why nobody is opening such businesses, we have now asked, “why not us?” We can do this. We can create a much needed allergy-friendly experience for my girls… and the many families in our community and beyond that are dealing with the exact same issues.
