MOTHERTONGUE: Women’s Spoken Word at Black Cat

For more than seven years, the Black Cat has hosted MotherTongue, a monthly women’s spoken word event. Occuring on the second Wednesday of each month, MotherTongue provides a safe space where all women may speak freely and powerfully and have their creative and artistic voices heard.

The proceeds from each event are donated to community-based nonprofit organizations that improve the lives of women and/or girls in the metro DC area. Over the years, MotherTongue has supported a diverse group of organizations, including the Black Lesbian Support Group, Dinner Program for Homeless Women, DC Rape Crisis Center, Hannah House, Helping Individual Prostitutes Survive, Lesbian Services at Whitman Walker, Tahireh, and Ophelia’s House, among many others.

If you would like to sign up to read at the next MotherTongue show, please email info@mothertongue.org. Please note that there is a limited number of spots available each month.
